Hot-switching protection on 8x2 4 years 4 months ago #116

I have a new 8x2 with Hardware Version 4.0 and Firmware Version 3.1.4. It is configured for PTP mode on both Port A and B.

I can see no evidence that the hot-switch protection is working. If I plug a shorted RCA plug into one of the PTT IN jacks, there is no LED that comes on to indicate that the feature is functioning.

Although not the only reason for my purchase, I remain very interested in having hot-switch protection in place. Is there a way for me to test this unit to see if it is defective?

Hello Dave,

You need to have an antenna selected for hot-switch protection to engage.

When protection is engaged an LED will light up and the selected antenna in the app will turn red.

Antennas are engaged on both Ports A and B, and the appropriate LEDs are illuminated adjacent to the antenna SO-239. However, no LED is illuminated if a shorted RCA is inserted in either PTT IN jack.

As a clarification, the 8x2 is in PTP mode and is not connected to the network, so observing its behavior in the app is not possible. It is being controlled by two automatic band decoders attached to the two radios.

I just did some testing with our in house AG and it seems that PTT protection does not engage when PTP is selected.
It works in all other modes.

So on the upside your hardware probably works as intended but on you won't be able use PTT protection in your current setup.

I do believe this is something that can be done in firmware and I'll add this to the developers to do list asap.

Dragisa,

It seems to me that PTP mode can be used universally with simple switches, which would appear to be the highest risk scenario. I agree with your plan to include hot-switch protection functionality in a future firmware release.

Thanks for your feedback, and now I know my 8x2 is not defective. I await a firmware update. Thank you.
